You made grilled cheese Tuesday night. Stood at the stove flipping it, maybe ninety seconds a side. Thursday you can't get out of bed. Nothing connects those two days unless you were already writing them down.
If you have ME/CFS, this is familiar. It looks random. It isn't — it's delayed.
The delay is the whole problem
Post-exertional malaise doesn't show up right away. It usually hits 12 to 48 hours after whatever caused it — sometimes longer. That gap is why it feels random. Your brain wants a cause that happens right before the effect. PEM doesn't work that way, so the connection gets missed, over and over.
The cause and the effect are just two days apart — long enough that memory doesn't catch it on its own.
What "pacing" actually means day to day
Pacing gets talked about a lot in ME/CFS spaces, and it's usually explained the same way: stay within your energy envelope, don't push past your limits. True, but not especially useful on its own. It doesn't tell you where your limit actually is.
You find that limit the same way you'd find any pattern — by writing down what happened and looking back at it later. Not in the moment. Later, once enough days have stacked up that a shape starts to show.
What's actually worth logging
Ask around in ME/CFS communities and this comes up constantly: understanding pacing isn't the hard part. Actually tracking it consistently is. Keep it simple. Four things, most days:
- What you did (physical, mental, social — all three count)
- Roughly how much it took out of you at the time
- What showed up afterward, and when
- How bad it was
That's it. You're not writing a diary. You're building a small, boring dataset that's more reliable than memory, because memory doesn't hold onto the link between Tuesday's dinner and Thursday's crash. Most general symptom trackers assume same-day cause and effect — log the headache the day of the headache. ME/CFS runs on a different schedule, so those trackers quietly stop being useful the moment PEM enters the picture. What actually helps is dated entries you can scan back across days later, built around the delay instead of against it.

Once you've got a couple of weeks logged, the look-back is where it pays off. You're not hunting for one dramatic trigger — you're looking for what shows up more than once. Twice is a pattern. Once is just a bad day.
